What are the Three Doshas in Ayurveda: Vata, Pitta & Kapha Bhanu AyurvedaRituals WellnessWell-being What are the Three Doshas in Ayurveda: Vata, Pitta & KaphaAyurveda suggests that our mind, body, and soul (consciousness) work together in enabling a balanced state of wellbeing. This balanced state of well-being comes through understanding the three Doshas in Ayurveda: Vata, Pitta & Kapha. The Three Doshas in Ayurveda and its Five Elements In Ayurveda, the whole universe, including the human body, comprises five essential elements called Pancha Mahabhoot in Sanskrit. These five essential elements are Space (Akasha), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), Water (Jal), and Earth (Prithvi). Three Doshas in Ayurveda Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, are combinations of various proportions of these five elements, present as energy patterns in all creation. Vata is predominantly made of Space and Air and is associated with movement. This subtle energy consists of the movement of fluids and nutrients to the cells. It also includes breathing, blinking, tissue movement, the beating of the heart, etc. Balanced Vata promotes creativity and fluidity, whereas an imbalanced Vata manifests fear and anxiety. Pitta is predominantly made of Fire and Water and is associated with digestive fire and the body’s metabolic system. It is the energy required to metabolize the nutrients in the cells. It governs the digestive fire, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients, regulation of body temperature, etc. Balanced Pitta manifests as intelligence and understanding, and an imbalanced Pitta as anger, hatred, and jealousy. Kapha is predominantly made of Earth and Water. It is associated with the body’s structure and foundation. This energy provides strength and stability to the body and mind. Kapha lubricates joints, bones, muscles, and tendons. It provides the strength to hold the structure together. This energy moisturizes the skin and maintains healthy immunity. Balanced Kapha promotes love, calmness, and forgiveness, and imbalance results in feelings of attachment, greed, and envy. How many Doshas one person can have We all have all three doshas, but mostly one is more dominant than the other two. For example, if your doshas test result shows Pitta-Kapha. It means you have Pitta dominant and Kapha as your second dominant doshas. Whereas Vata is the least; that’s why it doesn’t show in the result. In this scenario, you have to align with the Pitta-Kapha lifestyle and diet to reap the benefit of Ayurveda. There is also a third scenario which is a rare one where a person has three doshas dominating equally. It is the least found dosha type, also called Tridosha.
